Every two years since 1991 we have held International Workshops on Mutation Detection. Mutation Detection is a very specialised field and these workshops gather inventors and major users of mutation detection techniques to discuss new technologies, improvements of old techniques and their application as well as inherent problems in the techniques.
Past speakers have stimulated intense and lengthy discussions, a concrete sign that these meetings are fulfilling a need, and providing a forum where those involved in DNA diagnostics and mutation detection can meet and learn. Some commonly used methods were described at this series of meetings for the 1st time. These meetings are now recognized and attended by the specialists in Mutation Detection and are continuing to be the only such grouping of scientists occurring anywhere else in the world. The workshops are usually run with 20 to 30 invited speakers and a committed audience of 200 chosen for their interest via their abstracts. A report on the meeting held in Santorini, Greece may be seen in Nature Genetics Vol. 37, No. 10 p 1019 – 1021 and the last meeting held in Xiamen, China is now in press at Human Mutation, but available online at: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118480084/abstract.
